Associate Director of the Alice Paul Center at UPenn

The Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Program (GSWS) and the Alice Paul Center (APC) for Research on Gender, Sexuality, and Women in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania seek an Associate Director. The Associate Director works closely with the Director and Co-Director of the program and center to develop and strengthen the GSWS faculty research side of the GSWS program. S/he works in collaboration with SAS Corporate and Foundation Relations to identify relevant grant opportunities and communicate those opportunities to GSWS faculty in the Center. S/he will research relevant topic areas in support of the goals of the center and generate written reports around those topic areas for the Director and assist with other aspects of programmatic grant writing. S/he, in collaboration with the SAS Regional Business Office, facilitates and supports all administrative aspects of grant submissions for faculty associated with the Center, assists in organizing and running programs that such grants might fund, and will help the Center serve as a clearing house through which faculty can run their own grant programs. Additionally, s/he helps to plan and implement relevant programs, events, workshops and conferences for Penn students, faculty, and staff, as well as the broader community. The Associate Director may be asked to teach one course per year at the discretion of the director and thus should be qualified to teach such courses. The Associate Director of APC also serves as a liaison with the Penn Women’s Center, the LGBT Center, the Greenfield Intercultural Center, and other student and faculty organizations and centers, as well as with departments and schools across the University, in keeping with the focus of GSWS and APC on global feminism and LGBT/sexuality studies. S/he also may be asked to supervise and update the program’s website, help design and plan event publicity, and oversee the use of new media to enhance outreach to our multiple communities. It is preferred that the successful candidate should have a PhD or equivalent degree, considerable academic and/or practical experience in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, demonstrate some success with grant research and administration, and be able to work with a wide diversity of faculty and students in developing and implementing long-term plans for the Alice Paul Center.

This position requires strong academic credentials with a focus on Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies preferred but not necessary. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree is strongly preferred. Prior experience working for a University-affiliated Center for the study of Gender, Sexuality, and Women preferred. Experience with grants, conference organizing, new media outreach, and event publicity is a plus. Applicants should submit a cover letter with the application and C.V. online at the link below. The cover letter should include a statement of qualifications and experience, including program administration and/or writing grants, and indicate one or two projects they would most want to pursue as Associate Director of the APC. Supporting documents, such as sample grant applications that have been successfully reviewed, may be submitted but are not required. Additionally three letters of recommendation should be mailed directly to: Ms. Megan Kaufman, Department of Political Science, Stiteler Hall, 208 S. 37th St., The University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA 19104. Or letters may be emailed to Megan Kauffman <kaua@sas.upenn.edu> . Review of applications will begin March 15, 2015, and continue until the position is filled. This is a staff position and does not carry tenure.
